We have some interesting news! This year, we will be making a trip to Europe to attend SPIEL Essen in Essen, Germany. SPIEL Essen, often referred to as Essen Spiel, is the world’s largest public fair for board games. The convention is held annually in Essen, Germany, typically in late October, and attracts a massive crowd of visitors and exhibitors. The fair is intended for board gamers to be able to discover new games, play demos, meet with game designers, and purchase new products. The convention is more about board games than wargames but we are going over due to the generosity of Sound of Drums and Uwe Wallentin.
While there at the convention, we will be meeting several European wargame publishers such as the likes of Sound of Drums, Assault Games, PHALANX, Nuts! Publishing, Black Mask Verlag, NAC Wargames, Salt & Pepper Games, Portal Games, Osprey Games, VUCA Simulations and others. We have not finalized our convention itinerary and schedule as of yet but will be reaching out to many of these folks to get something setup. But our hope is to meet with lots of these publishers, talk with designers, play some prototypes and just have a great time. This has always been somewhat of a bucket list item for me and Alexander and we are finally getting the opportunity. We also hope to meet many of our foreign followers and chat and maybe play a game or two.

But, I wanted to also announce our plans to do some touring of historical sites. We will be arriving in Germany a full week prior to the game convention starting on Thursday, October 16th in order to get in a bit of site seeing and to visit several historical sites that I have always wanted to see. Our flight will come into Frankfurt and from there we will rent a car and begin our nearly 23 hour, 2,086 kilometers (nearly 1,300 miles) driving tour of western Europe.

In this long trip, we tentatively plan to stop and visit the following sites:
Metz – site of the Battle of Metz during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871.
Verdun – the location of the Battle of Verdun during WWI in 1916.
Maginot Line – this is a line of concrete fortifications, obstacles and weapon installations that were built by France in the 1930’s to deter invasion by Nazi Germany.
Bastogne – site of the Battle of Bastogne in December 1944 between American and German forces as part of the larger Battle of the Bulge.
Sedan – site of 2 pretty significant battles – one during the Franco-Prussian War and the other during World War II.
Paris – probably more so for the culture and the food but we are stopping in Paris to see the sites for at least a full day.
Normandy – I have always wanted to see the invasion beaches and particularly those attacked by the Americans in Utah and Omaha but also to soak in the atmosphere of this reverent place.
Sainte-Mère-Église – the site of some of the first airborne landings during the Normandy Invasion during World War II.
Mons – site of the Battle of Mons during World War I in 1914.
Waterloo – we all know Waterloo as it is where Napoleon was defeated by the Duke of Wellington during the Napoleonic Wars.
Liège – site of the the opening engagement of the German invasion of Belgium and the first battle of World War I.
Hells Highway – Highway 69 in Holland where XXX Corps raced up trying desperately to reach the bridge at Arnhem during World War II.
Nijmegen, Eindhoven and Arnhem – the 3 bridges that were objectives during Operation Market-Garden during World War II.
We are also planning on doing a series of daily travel log videos showcasing our trip and hope to be able to share this trip with you through our blog as well in some form or fashion (such as possibly the Daily Debrief Series).
I know that this is a lot to try and see over a 5 or 6 day period but we are going to do our best to get this all in as this really is a once in a lifetime opportunity for us. What other sites would you recommend?
One final note. We would love to meet many of you at the convention or even along the route of our trip if you would like to reach out and coordinate something. I cannot promise that we will be able to get to everything and meet everyone but we will do our best! You can email me at theplayersaid@gmail.com to make arrangements.
Thank you.
-Grant
I have been a few times and it is always a blast. Take it slowly. Make use of the food vendors in the middle of center. No need to get there first in line unless you are looking for something specific. Wait 30 min, and the lines will be less daunting. And this coming from someone who works as a vendor.

Hello Grant,
Wonderful news, i hope you will have a great time visiting France and Germany 👍. I don’t know if you found the small pdf i prepared for your trip around Normandy. And some Roman historic sites 🙂, on Slack.
Speaking of Essen i’m going to check if i can attend the convention. Last year i had book everything for 4 days , and the day before i left for Essen i’ve been tested positive to covid and had to cancel the trip 🙄😏

Hi Grant
On your way from Caen to Sainte-Mère-Église, you may want to visit the Longues gun coastal battery (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longues-sur-Mer_battery), one of the very few still with its guns & where the bunker scene of The Longest Day was shot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFzdleJarI0) then go to pay respect to the Fallen at Colleville-sur-mer cemetery (https://www.abmc.gov/cemeteries-memorials/about-normandy-american-cemetery/) overlooking Omaha beach.
When setting your GPS, beware of not going to Colleville-Montgommery, some 60 k away :-).

Thanks for the input. We will give this a look. My fear is we just won’t have the time.

I think a 5 day trip is a bit ambitious for your plans. I speak from experience (not to Europe, but to Israel). Keep your plans the same, but make it a 10 day trip. You will want to spend more time at the places you are going, and with the people you wil meet.

When a Marine says it is ambitious, then it certainly is 😀

Wow! What a wonderful trip that will be. Wish I was going. My wife and I did a Viking river cruise last summer on the Danube, Main and Rhine Rivers. We had so much fun. I wish I had gotten to more WW2 sites. I’m guessing you won’t get to every location you want to. Have fun. Can’t wait to see your videos of the trip.

Aloha! 😎🤙
Although I know that your time abroad will be limited, I highly recommend spending a little more time in the Paris area if you can. There is a great little hotel called the Lion d’Or in central Paris that is within walking distance from many of the major sites (Louvre, Musee d’Orsay, Les Invalides, Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Shakespeare Bookstore, Seine cruises, etc.) Versailles is only about 45 minutes away by train. https://www.hotelduliondor.com/en/

Hello Grant and Alexander
After working for the American Battle Monuments Commission in Belgium, I’ve been living in Liege for the last five years. I’d be happy to host you at the end of your trip to Essen; although your time is short, my home is about an hour or less from many of the stops, on your interestingly chosen itinerary: Eindhoven, Eben Emael; Bastogne in the Ardennes; Liege of course and Waterloo, but also very close by are the battlefields of Ramillies and Neerwinden, which are little changed. And, the area around Hannut which I drive through every week to take my son to his school is likewise, and surprisingly well-marked in the villages where the fighting between French Cavalry Corps and two German armored divisions occurred. You can use the game map from Hannut, France 1940 to view the terrain: I’d recommend bringing maps from relevant games with you!
I’d love to meet and take you to and through these sites or pass you information on the Belgian part of your itinerary. I hadn’t looked at your site for quite some time till yesterday and then I see you two are coming here. This is my email, if you want to follow-up outside of this post.

I think you all will have a fantastic time, Grant. If you have the chance to bring your wives with you, you will both be heroes. 😉
By total chance, I was called upon to transport my employer at the time to Germany in October 13 years ago. Realizing it was going to be a special trip, I asked, and was granted permission to have my wife accompany us on the business trip. With a full week to explore, our time started with multiple nights in Heidelberg (very highly recommended-the castle Schloss Heidelberg is a must see). We went on to pass through Cologne and spend a couple nights in Dusseldorf, which we also very much enjoyed. From there, my wife and I made the day trip for the pilgrimage to Essen Spiel.
My lasting memory is one of sensory overload: anything and everything gaming; the sheer size of the exhibition was amazing. My wife, who at best enjoys casual gaming, was quite impressed with the experience. All different types of games were on display. Plenty of opportunities to see various demos, and likewise, plenty of opportunities to empty your wallet. May want to consider bringing an empty carry-on case to bring home some treasure.
I will always remember the experience favorably. Glad I got to do it; never know if I will have the opportunity again.

Hi Grant,
Probably a bit late but here are some suggestions and observations for your trip. should you guys be visiting Cologne and like to be shown around just drop me a line, we have not only the cathedral to see but also the old Prussian fortifications if one is interested in them if you go to Paris and do not want to spent the day in lthe line before the entrance of the Louvre you can visit either the Air & space museum (https://www.museeairespace.fr/en/) or (my recommendation) the „Musée de l’armée“. That one is really a treat! I have never been to Mons but if you travel through western Belgium I would very much recommend a visit to Ypres!. The sheer scale of the various military cemeteries there, the Menin Gate, the local museum all make that a unique experience. I think there a day trips with local guides available but one can get a very good feel for that battlefield by driving on ones own along the salient. Personally I found the Arnheim Bridge underwhelming when I was there. Maybe one should look if there is somebody who can show you around. Best regards, Matt

If you can nudge it in, plan a stop at Ypres (preferable with time for the amazing (!) WW1 museum) and / or visit the Tyne Cot Cemetery. It is a good experience to somehow grasp the magnitude of the total carnage that WW1 was. I was literally shocked and my sense of this conflict has never been the same as before.
See you in Essen, chances are I can hook up with you in Bastogne. I was just visiting La Gleize, Malmedy and Stavelot again with the family.
Speaking of La Gleize. It is not too far from Bastogne, around 45 minutes by car and has a small but very well done museum. Along with a Kingtiger outside, in great condition. The museum can be done in about an hour. So you might want to detour a bit 😉

We will add these stops to our list and see what we can do. Just don’t have quite enough time to see everything which is a shame.
