Halls of Hegra is a solitaire-only wargame in the same vein as Euro-based games such as Robinson CrusoeThis War of Mine and Dead of Winter. The mechanics includes worker placement, bag building, and area control/tower defense and the goal of the game is to survive wave after wave of German troops as they assault the secluded mountain fortress at Hegra. The player takes on the role of the commander of the Norwegian forces during the three stages of the game including Mobilization, 1st Attack and finally the siege.

During the Mobilization Phase, the player will explore the fortress while digging through mountains of snow and old and broken equipment. New recruits will be joining the growing defensive force while supply routes are opened for the coming siege. During the 1st Attack, the village below the fortress is attacked as the player tries to defend it while final preparations are made before the Siege. This will include sending out patrols behind enemy lines to secure enough supplies to survive and also repairing and rebuilding the defenses. During the Siege, the player has to endure constant bombing and infantry attacks while keeping the morale up amongst their men.

The game is very challenging and will take some well laid plans and a bit of luck to survive. The game is not won in a conventional victory where the Norwegian forces defeat the masses of German troops but if they fight hard enough and stand long enough to receive favorable terms for their surrender.
