The August 2024 Monthly Debrief Video saw us discussing the subject of Reading Wargames (Wargame and Book Pairings). We were really excited about this topic as we have been doing a lot of reading of historical books lately and then shooting videos in the From Cover to Cover Series where we review the book but also talk about a few games on the chosen topic.
Also as usual, we covered the games we played in August and provided a look ahead at what games we plan on playing in September.
We will remind you here that we are fortunate to be continuing our relationship with Noble Knight Games as the sponsor for our Monthly Debrief Video series. In case you don’t know, Noble Knight Games specializes in hard to find games but also carry all the new releases. But what makes them truly unique is that you can find some of the rarest games, long out of print games, hand made games, imported games from overseas, etc. Thanks to them for their sponsorship and we hope that you will consider them first when looking for the games we cover.

This is my favorite monthly debrief you’ve ever done (and I have loved all of them). History books and history games are the best pairing ever, better than ham and eggs or wine and cheese. The only thing I can never decide is whether the games make me want to read more or the books make me want to play more games. That kind of goes back and forth.

Thanks for the feedback. I had a great time doing this one and have really enjoyed my more recent journey of getting back into reading more books. Just so busy with life, work and the hobby that reading has taken a bit of a back seat! But no longer…

Really enjoyed the topic. Wargames definitely fuel my appetite for books, and vice versus. It’s kind of funny. I found a book like A Time of Trumpets a little dry with all of its details on which battalion went where, but it definitely had me craving to pull out a Bulge game out and move some counters around.
On another topic, Alexander mentioned how great it would be to have Empire of the Sun on RallyTheTroops. Have you tried the vassal module? It will highlight all the ZOI’s for air units, you can click on an HQ and check its command radius and has a range finder to easily measure the distance between two hexes. Not quite as automatic as the games on RallyTheTroops, but it is very slick.

Alexander has played on Vassal. It is great the ZoI that shows.
