Cruel Necessity is a solitaire game simulating the military, political, and religious struggles of the English Civil Wars. Players will have to attempt to stop the advance of four armies bent on destroying Parliament and Puritanism, whom you represent. Simply holding on to London is not enough; you must also suppress the enemies of Puritanism, Parliamentary Government, and English domination. There are civil wars going on not just in England, but in Scotland and Ireland too; and each will have varying impact on the play of the game at different times.
The title comes from the purported response to the beheading of King Charles by his implacable foe, Oliver Cromwell, who remarked that this act of regicide was a “Cruel necessity.”
This version of the game is a Deluxe Edition and is printed with high quality components. The box, board, and counters are also thick and mounted. The player aids will have the largest font possible and be on nice quality card stock. The values, and thus the impacts, of the Achievement Cards have been changed. Errata from the classic Victory Point Games Edition has also been included.
We also published an interview with the designer John Welch and you can read that at the following link: https://theplayersaid.com/2022/11/02/interview-with-john-welch-designer-of-cruel-necessity-the-english-civil-wars-1640-1653-deluxe-edition-from-worthington-publishing-currently-on-kickstarter/

Hi Grant,
Great great video ; it kept me hooked for ages ( and meant Sunday’s dinner ( lunch ) was late. Loved the evident displeasure ( polite swearing ), at various setbacks, along with your perseverance.
However, after reviewing the games rules PDF on Worthington’s website, I noticed some game play errors re the Tactical Battles that I feel are worth commenting on:
I did get a trite confused over when to do 1 or 2 siege rolls whilst watching the video too, but perhaps that was just me…
Not grips, just comment – really loved the video !!

I did learn that I made a few mistakes later on in the game. As for the units that arrive later, I did that part correctly as they were put in with a card that was pulled. I was actually playing the game a bit harder than it is intended with doing the 3 different middle section battles. Thanks for watching.

Comments duly noted.
Sorry about my poor memory re the named leaders ; I must have had my attention diverted at the appropriate card pull moment, as I STILL cannot remember it, although it IS definitely there ( at 29.26 ( to 30.22 ) )…
NB : This is indeed a great game ( congrats to Mr Welch re his design ), but one I will probably never play ( as a committed Royalist ( re the English Civil War ) I just cannot bring myself to play the Roundheads / Parliament ) !
