The Dark Summer: Normandy 1944 is the latest addition to Ted Raicer’s WWII operational series that started in 2013 with The Dark Valley: The East Front Campaign 1941-45 and The Dark Sands: War in North Africa, 1940-42 (2018) both published by GMT Games and The Deadly Woods: Battle of the Bulge (2021) published by Revolution Games. The game system uses a chit-pull activation system that determines both the order and type of each sides’ actions during the game. This is one of the best elements of the design as it creates some real chaos and ultimately creates a “written” narrative of chits on the board. Because the game is chit pull, The Dark Summer is an excellent game for solo play.

Hey Alexander,
Hmmm… a D-Day Game. Maybe it’s me, but my interest in D-Day sort of begins and ends with AH’s “D-Day”, which I was playing back in 1967. Maybe it’s this whole idea of the Allied force being so overwhelming and the Germans being so understrength.
Having watched the unboxing, there are some bright spots…the chit pull system really saves this whole thing, from being a snoozer, so does the map…fantastic map! Well done.
I guess, having played so many strategic AH games, any repeats need to really show some massive new mechanics, and new twists and turns.
Looking forward to a possible play through or review. Keep up the great work.
