I own MBT but have not played it yet. However, I own Panzer and all of the available expansions and I can tell you this system is a masterpiece….as long as you do the work and learn the advanced rules.
I own over 100 wargames. From beginner titles to Advanced Squad Leader modules. Now, there are games that truly are a lot of work to learn that just mentally drain you. However, the Panzer/MBT system is not in that category. Maybe it is just how my brain works but when a rules system is intuitive and makes sense tactically and realistically, the rules are a lot easier to learn and remember (I find this to be the case for me in learning new game systems).
I played with the basic rules for my first game of Panzer but when I learned the advanced rules the game really shined. Like someone else mentioned, I wouldn’t purchase MBT or Panzer unless I intended to play with the full advanced rules. If you learn them you won’t be disappointed.
I found this game system was a pleasure to learn and the rules did not feel so much like work as with some other systems. Not only are the rule books written very well but the rules themselves, how they are laid out, how they interact, how they make sense when considering reality, makes even the advanced game manageable and definitely rewarding. Not to mention the comprehensive player aid cards and charts.
This is one of the best tactical combat systems out there and anyone interested in tank warfare should play this and Panzer. It is easy to be intimidated by the data pouring off of the vehicle cards, charts and player aid cards…it looks about as complicated as it gets. But trust me when I say it all flows together so nicely that disappointment will disappear from your vocabulary when you speak about this system in the future.
